The Marrickville LAC covers an area of 10.8 square kilometres, incorporating six inner city suburbs, including Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Petersham, Lewisham, Stanmore and part of Enmore. The entire Marrickville Local Area Command falls within the Marrickville Council with 73,431 residents (2001 Census). Marrickville LAC borders with the Ashfield LAC, Leichhardt LAC, and Newtown LAC.
The Marrickville LAC is one of the most densely populated and diverse areas in Australia. It covers the traditional land of the Gadigal nation. Over recent decades it has been a first point of call for new migrants into Australia. Approximately 40% of residents were born overseas with the top 5 birthplaces being, Vietnam, Greece, United Kingdom, New Zealand, China. Furthermore, the suburb of Petersham is characterised by a high number of Portuguese speaking residents. At the 2001 Census there were 983 people in the Marrickville Local Government Area who stated that they were of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. This represents 1.4% of the population in Marrickville, which is higher than the average proportion for Sydney of 1%.
The Marrickville LAC is easily accessible from Central Sydney due to the availability of public transport. The Marrickville LAC is approximately 7 kms from the centre of Sydney. Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Petersham, Lewisham and Stanmore all have a city rail station.
Based on the 2001 Census information the predominant age of residents in the Marrickville LAC is between 30-34 years, followed by those between 25-29 years. The majority of residents in the Marrickville LAC are young to middle aged working adults. The Marrickville LAC, particularly within the suburbs of Marrickville and Petersham, has a large amount of easily accessible low-income accommodation in the form of boarding houses and hostels.
MAJOR & CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURES
The Marrickville Metro in Smidmore Street, Marrickville, is the major built up shopping complex within the Command. Each of the suburbs of Marrickville, Stanmore, Petersham, Lewisham and Dulwich Hill have a railway station and associated Central Business District. The Marrickville CBD is the largest of these. Parramatta road, Enmore road and New Canterbury road travel through or alongside the Marrickville LAC and carry traffic well into south and western Sydney
SIGNIFICANT LOCAL CALENDAR EVENTS
Australia Day Festival:
On the celebrated Australia Day holiday, Marrickville Council holds a citizenship ceremony at Enmore Park. The entertainment at this festival includes singers and other acts, stalls and fireworks. The average crowd for this event is between 10,000 and 15,000.
Marrickville Festival:
The Marrickville Festival is an annual event held on the first Sunday in September. The Marrickville council estimates the average attendance of 40,000 for this event.
The main street of Marrickville is blocked off for the entire day with dozens of stalls and a variety of entertainment being organised by the council.
CRIME
Consistent with other inner Sydney LACs, the Marrickville LAC has seen a downturn in Robbery, Break and Enter, Stealing and Stolen Vehicle offences over the past 5 years. This is believed to be due to several factors that include a decrease in the availability of heroin across the state and the crime associated with its use. Five years ago Marrickville was the home to around 25 drug premises. This has been reduced to only a handful. However, heroin is still considered location of preference for heroin users in metropolitan area.
COMMUNITY POLICING INITIATIVES/PROGRAMS
The “Safety in Marrickville Plan” is a community development approach with Police assisting the Council to improve safety in the Marrickville Local Government Area. The Marrickville Crime Prevention Officer, Local Area Commander, Youth Liaison Officer and Crime Coordinator constantly liaise with the council and community to seek improvements in crime prevention initiatives. Two major safety audits have recently been completed with plans for an audit of the Marrickville CBD in 2004.
Community Consultative committee meetings are regularly held as part of this plan with Police attending all meetings.
These meetings are held in addition to PACT meetings (Police Accountability Community Team). PACT meetings occur every three months and include the Mayor of Marrickville, local councillors and interested members of the public. They are designed as a means of providing feedback to the local community.
DEBBIE & ABBEY BORGIA COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTRE (PCYC)
In October 2003 The Marrickville Council has constructed a multipurpose sporting and community complex in South Marrickville. The centre is managed by the Marrickville Council and provides facilities for PCYC staff who are developing programs for local youth and also catering for community programs.
